January 2017

Happy new year to everyone.  I'm sure you will all have had the snow by now.  It has also been very frozen lately too making riding quite tricky at times.  Still - its a nice change from the mud.  We are hoping to bring you an Events calendar soon for 2017.  Hopefully there will be something for everyone to enjoy.  Please do remember if there is anything you would really like us to include do get in touch and we will try to include it if we have enough interest.  The Headley Clay pigeon shoot dates have been updated on the shoot page so remember to check the dates so you can avoid the path that runs from Headley to Walton on the Hill on the relevant days if you and your horse aren't keen on the guns.  We hope to catch up with you all very soon.

November 2016

Wow - winter has suddenly arrived!  Our Autumn Dressage series has now finished and was very successful.  We have also held our AGM which was fairly well attended.  Please do consider coming next year.  We have refreshments and this year had a presentation of all the events of this year and the work we have done to improve paths.  Last week was our Vet Talk on Laminitis, EMS and Cushings (PPID) which was presented by Joe Sharps - senior vet at Priory Veterinary Surgeons.  This was very popular and we has some really good feedback so thanks to Joe for giving up his free time.  Priory Vets have been extremely supportive of HHRA and have presented 3 vet lectures for us in the last 2 years.  At the end of October we managed to finally get the Oyster Hill path resurfaced which we hope you all love as much as we do!  The committee will be starting to plan our 2017 events soon so exciting times!

September 2016

The summer has flown by incredibly quickly this year!  Our Dog show was once again an incredible success.  Thank you to all who came.  There are some photos on the website to purchase from Janet Figg - some adorable doggies there!  The other event that we have had is the BBQ which again was really successful.  Tracey made the amazing vegetarian food again which was really scrummy.  Everyone seemed to have a great time - lots of smiling faces.  The weather was very kind to us too.

The nights are starting to draw in a bit and the mornings are definitely getting darker :(  To cheer yourself up we have lots of events planned for the next few weeks. The quiz is coming up on the 13th September.  Entries need to be in asap so get your teams organised!  This is normally oversubscribed and we do have a maximum we can fit in the hall so don't miss out!  As always a fish & chip supper is included.  Our 2 grid clinics planned for Sept and Oct are already full which shows how popular they are!  And our Autumn Dressage series is about to start.  Members should have just received the schedule and have a few days priority to enter before it is opened to non members.  Some classes filled very quickly in the Spring so again please do get your entries in quickly if you don't want to miss out.  We often have lots of lovely comments from competitors at our dressage series about how friendly the events are.  We do aim these dressage events at everyone from happy hackers having a go a an Intro test to people competing at affiliated Elementary level.  Have a go, do your best, but most of all enjoy it!

A short plea to all our members to please come to our AGM on 13th October.  The boring bit is very short and we really value your input!

July 2016

We held a very successful Fun Ride on 18th June.  It was a different route this year with riders making their way towards Epsom Downs and then back to Headley Heath.  Not too many dramas, and lots of smiling faces when they came back!  It is quite a feat of organisation to run this and there was a great team behind it including many stewards who had volunteering to help out.  A massive thank you to everyone who contributed to making it a great success and to Loretta Lodge gallops for allowing us the use of the gallops for the morning.  Most people completed the ride in around 2.5 hours which is what we had timed it at.  Thank goodness we have a year to recover before running it again!  Next week is our Dog Show on Headley Heath by the main car park.  Please come and support us with your pooches!  It really is a fun event.  Lots of doggies usually have a go at the dog agility which is very popular and terribly good fun.  During August we also have our BBQ to look forward too which is again very popular, especially with all the non-horsey other halves!  It is a great way to meet other riders in the area and make some contacts.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

May 2016

Since last writing we have had the track resurfaced which runs from Slough Lane up to the Cock Inn.  This was the first path created by HHRA all those years ago and was in need of some attention.  It is now re-fenced and cut back considerably so that 2 horses can ride alongside.  It is now great to ride on again.  We have just finished our 2 May dressage events both very successfully.  Thank you to everyone who came - we hope you all enjoyed yourselves.  Our next event is the Fun Ride which is going to be very popular this year.  With kind permission of Loretta Lodge we have the use of their circular gallops which will be included as part of the ride.  You won't have to go on the gallops if you don't want to and you certainly don't have to gallop (!), but it is a good chance to have a nice trot/canter on a good surface. We will be requesting help for stewarding for this event so if you're able, please do help out.  During July we have our always popular Dog Show on Headley Heath.  Its great fun for all dogs whatever shape or size and we will hopefully have our dog agility course up again so you can have a go

April 2016

So one minute we are in the depths of winter with the long cold nights and the next the clocks have changed and the light evenings are here!  I hope you are all enjoying the start of spring - even though it has been a little wet meaning many events have been cancelled for those of you that compete.  Our first dressage was a success in March and we are now looking forward to two more to follow in May.  At the time of writing there are a few spaces in the Novice and Elementary classes but the Intro and Prelim classes are full for 1st May.  We get some wonderful feedback from our dressage events about how well organised and friendly the events are.  There are a dedicated team who run these events - we call them 'Team Dressage' lead by Tracey and Liz.  Each and every one of them do a fantastic job to make every competitors day a good one.  We have a new committee member - Janet Figg.  Many of you will know Janet who is our amazing photographer at most of our events.  Janet is also going to take over producing the quarterly Newsletter from Sam who has quite enough to do writing to you all and posting on Facebook!  I am sure you will join us in welcoming her.  Please keep an eye on our events page as we will add more clinics during the year and possibly more talks etc.  If there is anything you are very keen for us to organise please get in contact and if there is the demand we will try to do it!  Happy Riding!

January 2016

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Well it has snowed today - almost the first sign of winter for some of us!  Lets face it - although inconvenient it is pretty and not nearly as wet as all the rain we have had!  We are looking forward to planning many events during 2016, so please watch this space.  The Clay pigeon shoot dates for 2016 are now updated on our page so please make a note of them and try to avoid the Pony Club Field - Headley Village Bridleway if possible on those dates as the noise is really quite loud.   Thank you so much to all of you who continue to support our work.  We really do appreciate it and it's great to see so many of you at our events enjoying yourselves.  Here's to a great 2016!

November 2015

So much has happened since the last update in August!  The Addlestead Farm Bridleway has been completed and looks amazing.  Many thanks to SCC for all there help with this.  We have already held 2 successful Autumn Dressage Competions and the last of the season is the Sunday 29th November.  As usual these events have been incredibly well subscribed as usual.  We held our AGM in October and that was also well attended.  The weather now seems to have made a turn for the worse with the colder temperatures during the last week - winter is definitely here!  On a cheery note though it is less than 4 weeks now until the shortest day and after that our days will gradually get longer.  Keep safe during the winter with your horse and rider hiviz :)

August 2015

Works on the Addlestead Farm  Bridleway have started by Surrey County Council.  We had spent a few months speaking with our contact at SCC regarding this track as the surface had degraded badly and was very boggy in the winter months.  Hopefully works will soon be complete and the track will be far superior this winter!  We held another dressage clinic earlier this month, but our larger event for the end of the month is our Gymkhana!  Please do come along and support us.  Adults (wishing to relive their youth) most welcome as well as children.  There is a fabulous hamper up for grabs for the winner of the Fancy Dress competition so get your sewing kits/glue out!  The cattle have returned to the Heath and are due to be there until the end of December, however we will update you when we know more.  We hope you are enjoying the lovely summer we have been having with your horses.

July 2015

We had a very busy June with some great events and great feedback from you too.  The tour of Liphook was very well attended at the beginning of June.  They provided us with a fantastic spread of food and a very informative tour.  The Fun Ride was once again extremely well subscribed.  Massive thank you to all our stewards who helped to make this event possible.  There was some lovely feedback from this and one very touching card received too.  The BBQ - which was last week, was again well attended and lots of praise for the food!  It was a great team effort by the committee which we all enjoyed.  Don't forget the Dog Show this weekend (11th July 2015) and the Gymkhana is not that far off too!  Watch this space for more information about clinics etc.  Thank you for your continued support and keep enjoying the lovely weather!

May 2015

Hopefully you are all enjoying the lovely weather that we have been having and enjoyed time with your horses and ponies.  The year is whizzing by very quickly!  6th Valley Track that was temporarily closed over the end of the winter has now re-opened.  We have had good reports back so far, and we are hoping that it will continue to settle as time passes.  Don't forget we have lots of Events coming up - Dressage on 24th May, our Tour of Liphook - on 2nd June (in the evening) and the Fun Ride - on 13th June.  The schedules for the Fun Ride will be available very shortly and be emailed out.  They will also be on the website so please keep checking back.  We will continue to update the Events page during the year and there may be some new Events added so watch this space!

March 2015 Dressage Report

The first competition of our Spring dressage series was a great success, with 40 competitors. Results are now available on the website. Please note only HHRA members are eligible for the Championship.
Many congratulations to our winners, who got off to a flying start to the series:
Intro: Diane Cripps and Toldi
Prelim: Lilian Johns and Archie
Novice: Gabbi Gervaise-Brazier and Almost an Angel
Ele/Medium: Amy Hull and Dolly
A special mention for Diane and Lilian, both were competing their horses for the first time, great results, well done!.  Liz Gill was the deserving winner of the Easter Bonnet competition and also did a great test with her first ride on Echo to finish second in the novice.
A big thank you to our judges Madeleine Herridge and Allie Phipin.
Lastly, many thanks to our very good humoured and loyal helpers, Helen, Miranda, Zoe, Patrick Liz and Karen and to our sponsors Bowles and Company for the lovely ribbons.
We look forward to welcoming you at the next competition on Sunday 19th April.

March 2015

Thank you to all who came to our volunteer day at the beginning of March.  It was a lovely sunny day and a lot was achieved.  Our quiz night was again very popular with Floyd's Fillies winning by a very narrow margin.  The Dressage in March is already filling up fast and will no doubt be full again so please get your entries in fast!  April's Dressage Clinic is already full but we can put your name on a waiting list in case there are any cancellations.  If there is the demand for he clinics we can always organise more of these events. There is another dressage clinic in August and 2 Show jumping clinics - one in June and another in September.  our Events page is constantly being updated so please do keep checking back there.  There are more Events in the pipeline too which are not currently listed.  We do hope you are all enjoying our current 'Spring Time' weather and long may it continue!

January 2015

Happy New Year to all our members!  We are currently working on our Events schedule for 2015 and have some dates already set so please check out our Events page for more details. This is not a complete list and more events will be added during the next few weeks so watch this space!  There are on going discussions with the National Trust and contractor regarding the works carried out on Headley Heath last year.  One of the overriding problems is that as Headley Heath is an area of SSI (special scientific interest) we are unable to bring any materials onto the heath (of any type) to assist drainage.  This limits our capabilities somewhat however we are still hopeful that we can resolve the issues we currently have.  The 2015 Clay Pigeon shoot dates have also been updated so you might want to make a note of them to avoid the Bridleway between Church Lane and the Pony Club Field/Chequers Lane at shoot times.  We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible during 2015!

December 2014

Today we had our last dressage event of 2014.  All our classes were full and we were extremely oversubscribed. Thank you to everybody that came and we hope you enjoyed the day.  The weather held off for us in the main.  Huge thanks to our fantastic judges and dressage team who organise and run these events.  Our dressage competitions wouldn't be possible without these fantastic people giving up their free time to ensure the day runs smoothly.  We are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our Christmas Mulled Wine & Mince pies social on 13th December 3-6pm.  Our dressage championships prize giving will be held at about 3.15pm.  Please feel free to pop in at anytime between 3 and 6pm to warm up and catch up with us.  We are looking forward to 2015 and lots more successful events!

October 2014

What happened to the summer?!?  Autumn is now upon us.  It was lovely to see so many of you at the AGM on the 16th October and we got some great feedback from you so thank you for that.  Another successful dressage on the 19th which was (as usual) over subscribed.  Novembers dressage is already half booked so get your entries in fast!  Photos are now available on the website from 16th October dressage.  Sorry no Intro combinations or early Prelims as Janet was booked to another venue first thing.  In September we had a great day with the National Trust repairing gates and renewing some of the mounting blocks on the heath.  Lots of tea was drunk and biscuits eaten too!  We are delighted to announce that Vintage Equestrian will be sponsoring our Autumn Series Championships.  You will receive points for all your placings in the October, November and December dressage competitions and the most points at each level (Into, Prelim, Novice, Elementary) will receive an embroidered saddlecloth and a trophy!  Please go to our links page to read more about Vintage Equestrian.  With the clocks changing this coming weekend please remember to wear your Hi Viz at all times when on the roads.  It gets dark very quickly at this time of year.  Happy Riding!

August 2014

August has been a quieter month for us which has given us a bit of a breather.  We have been busy organising the Gymkhana which is on Saturday 30th in the afternoon - please see our Events page... we hope you can join us!  Our next event after this is our Volunteer Day which we really hope some of you can come to even if you can only spare an hour or so.  It is a great chance to interact with the National Trust and to put our views across - remember, they are not horse owners and therefore don't always realise the problems that we encounter!  We are also busy preparing for the AGM in October which will have a bit of a twist to it that we hope you will enjoy!  Don't forget our 100th member will receive a £20 voucher of their choice just for joining us, so please encourage all your friends to be part of our Association.  We are also now pleased to offer all HHRA members a 10% discount at SuperPet the Horse Shop.  Please see our Links page for more details.

July 2014

We really have had a busy month!  The Fun Ride was held on 12th July with 48 people taking part!  A massive thank you to all the volunteers we had to steward and to the National Trust for helping us so much with this event.  The lovely Mark Dawson drove us around to mark our route and helped with stewarding all day.  We have a volunteer day for the National Trust coming up in September which will involve working specifically on our bridleways.  It would be lovely if some of you who enjoyed the day could come and help.  We understand that most people lead busy lives but even helping for an hour can make a difference and it is great to feel part of a team!  On the 19th July we held our Dog Show which again was a massive success.  Janice and Lucy did a fabulous job of organising this event and didn't even panic when the caterer let us down less than an hour before we were due to start!  Our photos from both events are now on our Photos page and available to purchase from Janet Figg......see the bottom of the page on how to order.   Janet is a great supporter of HHRA and gives up lots of her free time to attend these events and does not really make any profit from her photos.  She does this so that we can all have lovely memories of our days out and we are very grateful to her.  Still lots to look forward to this year so we hope to see you soon..........

June 2014

Many thanks to Leslie Whipps for his excellent coaching on our Dressage Clinic.  This was very popular and filled quickly.  We will run more Clinics in the future as the feedback from you all was very positive.  Keep an eye on our Events page and Facebook for any further updates.  The Team Dressage was a big success again.  Thanks to all our lovely judges, Helen Turk and Madeleine Herridge; writers Maggie and Helen; super steward Karen; and mathematical genius Miranda, not forgetting Liz and Tracey for organising and running the event!  We had 67 people at the BBQ which was a great success.  The weather was kind to us and we will definitely hold another summer social next year.....
May 2014
In April we held a very successful Vet lecture which many of you enjoyed.  Many thanks to Mike Burrell of Priory Vets for his time.  I think everyone learned something new!  Our Showjumping clinic at the beginning of May was also popular with many asking when we can do it again.  Thanks to Tony Whipps for his excellent coaching.  Our volunteer day also at the beginning of May was productive and some large areas on the Heath were cleared.  This is a great way to meet new people and feel part of a community.  Our Facebook page is also now up and running and will keep you up to date with all our latest goings on.  Keep watching our events page and facebook as we may add more lectures/clinics if we have the demand.
We would like to say a massive THANK YOU to Maggie and Jim Parker for replacing the broken gate at the entrance to the Headley Park Farm bridleway.  The gate was the responsibility of Surrey County Council, however after many reports to them about the broken gate, nothing had been done.  Maggie and Jim paid for all the work, and a fantastic new 'horse friendly' gate so all the local riders could use the path again safely.  On behalf of all the riders in the area, HHRA would like to say thank you so much!
April 2014
What an amazing night we had on 27th March at our Quiz night!  Photos and results in the next Newsletter.  Many thanks to all the helpers, including some non-members, who turned up early to help us set up.  We hope you all enjoyed yourselves and we are so sorry we had to turn people away, however the Hall really was jam packed!  Our Events page is starting to fill out a bit.  Some dates are still to be confirmed so keep checking back!
March 2014
Bowles & Co Solicitors have kindly agreed to sponsor our dressage event in June 2014.  Please visit our 'Links' page to find out more about the company and for a link to their website.
3 of the Committee took a tour of Headley Heath with the Head Ranger last week.  We have uploaded a map of the Heath onto the 'Headley Heath' page which shows where horses are allowed...only where the blue dotted lines are.  Please make sure you keep to these tracks as horses have been spotted on Middle Hill and we saw hoof marks by Bridges Oaks.  Horses are not allowed on this area and it is important that everyone respects the rules of the Heath.  Most of the paths on Headley Heath are permissive paths - which means that permission to ride on them can easily be taken from us.  Many thanks.
Dressage February 2014
Another hugely popular dressage event in which all the classes were full.  We would like to say a huge thank you to all of you who came and supported the event and especially to the following people who gave up their free time and without who we could not run these events.
Karen Kemp - stewarding
Helen Turk - organising and providing gifts for judges
Susie Watson & Madeleine Herridge - judges
Zoe & Miranda Golding - writing for judges & scoring
Maggie Parker - coffee and sausage rolls
Janet Figg - photographer
Liz Gill & Tracey Mitchell - who organise our dressage events
Dressage will be back in June..........keep an eye on the events page for more details
February Newsletter now published - See our Newsletter page

Dressage December 2013 & January 2014

On Behalf on HHRA we would like to say thank you for all your support and we hope you have enjoyed the dressage events as much as we have. A special thank you to our great judges for giving up their own time to come and judge. A huge thank you to Liz and Tracey who have organised these events, also to Karen and Helen who have worked really hard to insure we are running on time.

Thank you again.

14th December 2013 - Meet & Greet

On 14th December we held our "Meet & Greet" event at Headley Village Hall.  This was an opportunity for members (old and new) to meet the new Committee and join us for a drink and a bite to eat.  The afternoon was a big success.  Many lapsed members re-joined, and we attracted a few new members too!

Mary Brooks (previous Chairwoman) and Beverlee Edwards (previous Treasurer) joined us to cut the cake bearing our new HHRA logo.......

November 2013
As some of you may be aware, the original committee of the Headley Heath Riders Association have decided to take a very well earned retirement after a very impressive 30 years! A new committee has recently been formed. We would like to all say a big thank you to the original committee for all the hard work they have put in to make the riding around Headley safer, so a big thank you to you all.  So here goes a new committee - here we come.  There will of lots of new ideas to look forward to in 2014.
